Philadelphia and the Door God Opens
By Michael Youssef, Ph D. 11/10/22
Read Revelation 3:7-13.
Of the seven letters from Jesus in the book of Revelation, this one is the most positive. The people of Philadelphia must have brought joy to Jesus’ heart because Jesus does not chastise them for a single sin. He mentions no compromise and no false teaching. Instead, this letter is filled with His praise, encouragement, and mission.
In the first century, Philadelphia had earned a reputation as an exporter of Greek culture. But now, Jesus has something better for His people in Philadelphia to export. He has a vision for their life: to bring a message greater than Greek philosophy to the rest of the world. For this reason, He has given them “an open door that no one can shut” (Revelation 3:8).
The believers in Philadelphia faced many obstacles and difficulties. Opposition threatened to derail them, and they had to contend with their own weaknesses. In these ways, they are no different than we are. And like them, God has given us open doors to make His Gospel message known.
My friend, God provides opportunities for us to share our faith. He brings people to us who have open hearts to hear the Good News. He places them into our lives so that we can be His ambassadors. But we must ask ourselves: Are we willing to walk through these doors that God has opened before us?
Prayer: Father, thank You for the example of the church of Philadelphia. May I be a bold witness for You so that I might have the privilege of receiving even more open doors to proclaim Your Gospel Truth. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“I know your deeds. See I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut” (Revelation 3:8).
